KENYA

Lupao Dog Market in Kakamega Central District, Western Province, Kenya (Local event)

Rabies Education and Vaccination Campaign Day
Duration: 9/28/2010, 8:00am to 9/28/2010, 5:00pm

Every Thursday morning at 6:00am villagers enter majestically in the sleepy town of Lubao for their economic activity of dog selling by dragging them on bicycle and walking them too. This market is active all year round with average 100 dogs traded per week the highest among the five dog markets in Western Kenya. The females and males prices range Ksh. 400 and 850 respectively. There is lack of procedural movement permits and vaccination records of the dogs as the veterinary department is understaffed and the cost of vaccine to the locals is prohibitive. Dr. Nanyingi a researcher in infectious zoonotic diseases and District veterinary officer in neighboring Khwisero District in conjunction with local veterinarians and international research organizations is spearheading an ambitious campaign. He and doctors from the Kakamega provincial General Hospital envisages to educate the Public on the risk and exposure to rabies, management practices, vaccination regimes in dogs and post exposure prophylaxis to the rural community. They aim to launch of a rabies vaccine for every sold dog and resident veterinarian to continuously provide affordable vaccine on cost sharing basis of buyer and seller. Targeted population is 1200 persons and 200 dogs to be vaccinated. These will ensure that the public education on rabies will be enhanced and the status of all dogs will be free of rabies. The education will include use of pictures, posters and videos. While interactive sessions of the trainers and the community members for demonstration of the dangers will be included. We anticipate that with increased community awareness and disease free population the epidemic of rabies can be greatly reduced and eliminated in this area and neighboring dog markets.

ZAMBIA

Lusaka, Zambia (Local event)

Rabies Awareness
Duration: 09/25/2010, 10:00am to 09/26/2010, 5:00pm

Lusaka Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) is spearheading this mass public awareness campaign about rabies. Because it is an endemic disease in Zambia which has had scant to no publicity with regard to prevention and treatment, we feel we need to make it a priority, in conjunction with World Rabies Day, which is held on September 28th every year. There are many deaths in Zambia from rabies, and sadly a recently conducted study showed that records are no longer kept, and prevention and treatment advise is poorly supported or promoted within the departments that should be responsible for this public health issue. Mr. Paul Richards, CEO of ICC has agreed to sponsor 350 school children from compound schools to attend the Munda Wanga event, where LAWS committee members and Munda Wanga education staff will educate them about rabies, using power-point and interactive activities, as well as a PG 13 film on rabies. This event will be open to the public as well, and will be the main focus for dedicated educational events. Mr. Bradford Machila, Minister for Livestock and Agriculture has kindly agreed to open the Rabies event held at Munda Wanga on the 25th September. There will also be a fund raising and awareness event at Adventure City on Sunday 26th September, where people can sponsor school children, or adults, to do a water Splash (slide). Several schools will be participating, but this event will have less official educational activities, (rather leaflet handouts) and be more about fun and fund raising. The American International School plans to make it their big day out! The British High Commissioner will also be attending, and the US Ambassador has been asked to support us as well.
